The Egyptian Walking Onion is a vegetable on the move.
As well as producing an onion root bulb like regular onions Egyptian Walking Onions send up tall stalks which produce a cluster of onions on their tips where you might expect a flower to be.
These top setting onions make the plant so top heavy the stems slowly bend to the ground. When the top onion clusters touch the soil they put down roots, which in turn send up more stalks with more onions on its tips, which bend to the ground again and so on. The result is a fascinating plant that can walk its way across your garden!
Despite its wandering ways, Egyptian Walking Onions are easily controlled and not at all invasive. Every part of this vegetable tastes wonderful; the top clusters, the greens and the roots.
